With roughly 240 miles of mapped cycleways and paths, Carmel has built a path system of unusual depth for a city of its size, and much of it genuinely connects. Paths run through and between neighbourhoods rather than only around their edges, so a rider can cross large parts of the city without leaving dedicated infrastructure. The seams are where the path system meets the commercial arterials — the crossings and short on-street links that decide whether a route works door to door. The network's bones are excellent. The remaining opportunity is finishing those junctions, so that what joins up on the map joins up in practice for every kind of trip.

Carmel offers a dependable seven-month core: April through October sits in the good range, with no hot season to plan around at the height of a Midwestern summer. November through March turns cool in the way central Indiana winters do — cold, grey stretches with occasional snow and ice that interrupt riding for days at a time. On flat ground with an extensive path network, the cool months are more rideable than they look for anyone with decent layers, though most riders here treat winter as the off season. This is a long, reliable riding year with a real winter at each end. The weather sets a rhythm; it does not set a ceiling.

Here is Carmel's paradox: 240 miles of paths, and about 0.2% of commuters biking to work. The network was built with recreation in mind, and that is largely how it is used — the car remains the default for nearly every errand, school run, and commute. The reasons are structural: homes, jobs, and shops are spread at driving distances, and the commercial corridors that hold the destinations are the one place the path network serves least. Yet no city is better positioned to change this. The expensive infrastructure already exists; converting even a small share of short car trips to bike trips is a matter of connections and habit, not construction. This is the profile's clearest opportunity.
