Make the case.

Sooner or later someone asks why the city should spend anything on bikes — a council member, a principal, the neighbor at the fence. Here's the evidence, dated and caveated, because the caveats are what make it persuasive.

At some point every everyday rider gets deputized into an argument they didn’t schedule — at a fence, in a break room, at a podium. This guide is the ammunition, clearly labeled, and the label matters more than the ammunition. The fastest way to lose a skeptic is to overclaim; the most underrated way to win one is to hand them your caveats before they go looking. What follows is the evidence as it stands, dated, sourced, disputes included.

You don't win the room by having the most impressive number. You win it by being the person whose numbers check out.

The heavyweight: health

The strongest card in the deck. A 2017 study in the BMJ followed 263,450 UK commuters over five years and found that cycle commuting was associated with substantially lower all-cause mortality, cancer incidence, and cardiovascular disease compared with driving or transit (Celis-Morales et al., BMJ 2017). It’s one large study in one country — but it sits on a broad, consistent pile: reviews of cycling and health keep landing in the same place, which is that regular riding is associated with markedly lower risk of early death and chronic disease.

The caveat to volunteer: these are observational studies. Researchers adjust for the obvious confounders (the BMJ study controlled for a long list), but observational data can’t fully prove the bike caused the health — healthier people may also be likelier to ride. Say that sentence yourself, then note that the association survives adjustment in study after study. You’ll be the most credible speaker of the evening.

The pattern: safety in numbers

The classic citation is Jacobsen’s 2003 study in Injury Prevention, which compared dozens of California cities, Danish towns, and European countries and found that where more people walk and bike, the per-person collision rate is lower — not linearly, but reliably.

The caveat to volunteer: this is a correlation with a debated mechanism. Maybe drivers behave differently where riders are common; maybe safer places simply attract more riders; the fair answer is “probably some of each, and researchers still argue about the ratio.” What nobody seriously disputes is the pattern itself — and the practical upshot you can say plainly: places with lots of everyday riders are not the carnage skeptics predict. More riding has not meant proportionally more injury, anywhere it’s been measured.

The pocketbook: bikes and local business

Merchants’ real fear — “lose the parking, lose the customer” — deserves a straight answer, and the best-documented one comes from Toronto: when Bloor Street’s pilot bike lane replaced curb parking, a 2017 study by the Centre for Active Transportation and the University of Toronto surveyed 525 merchants and 3,005 visitors and found customer counts and monthly spending rose during the pilot, with people arriving by bike and on foot outspending those arriving by car. Similar street-level studies elsewhere have mostly rhymed with it.

The caveat to volunteer: these are studies of particular streets — dense, walkable, transit-served ones, mostly. A shopping street in a different fabric might behave differently, and a fair reading is “the catastrophe merchants fear keeps not happening, and modest gains keep showing up.” If a local merchant is worried, the winning move is suggesting the city measure your street before and after — the ask becomes data, which is very hard to be against.

The everyday arithmetic

Some of the case needs no study at all, just geometry said out loud. A bicycle parks at roughly ten to a car space. A rider is a car absent from the queue at the light — bike infrastructure is congestion relief that drivers receive without doing anything. A kid who rolls to school is a car absent from the drop-off scrum. None of this is contested; it’s arithmetic wearing a helmet. For skeptical audiences it often outperforms the studies, because nobody can suspect geometry of having an agenda.
