Some days the bike is pure joy and you need no help at all. This guide is for the other days — the tired, grey, can’t-be-bothered ones, when a trip you’d normally love feels like far too much. Here’s the reassuring secret: the people who ride for years aren’t more motivated than you. They’ve just collected a few tricks for the days motivation doesn’t show up.

You don't have to feel like riding. You only have to start — and starting is a much smaller thing than it pretends to be.

The two-block rule

The single best trick: promise yourself only the first two blocks. Tell yourself you’ll ride to the corner and turn straight back if you still hate it. You almost never turn back. Starting is the entire difficulty; once you’re moving, the reluctance usually lifts within a few minutes and you wonder what the fuss was. Lower the bar to begin, and the rest tends to follow you home.

Make the easy choice the default

  • Keep the bike ready — pumped, lit, and free of clutter — so nothing sits between you and going.
  • Attach the ride to a reason you already have: the shop, the school, the café, a friend. An errand pulls you out the door when willpower won’t.
  • Shrink the ride. A short trip you actually take beats a grand one you skip. Ten minutes is a real ride.
  • Lay out the small stuff the night before on days you know you’ll wobble.

Be kind about the days you skip

Real exhaustion, foul weather, a body that needs rest — take the bus, take the day, feel no guilt. The goal was never a perfect streak; it’s a habit that survives being imperfect. Skipping today without shame is exactly what makes riding easy again tomorrow.
