The Compass

Barstow, by bike.

Barstow's best cycling asset is its calendar. Sitting in California's high desert, it hands riders long stretches of dry, clear weather across spring and fall, when getting out on a bike is genuinely pleasant. The built network is still at the very beginning — dedicated infrastructure barely registers yet, so most riding today happens on shared roads, and the desert summer asks riders to go early or wait for evening. The terrain adds some work, and calm, separated routes are more an aspiration than a reality here. This is a place near the start of its cycling story, where the raw ingredients (space, dry air, a long ridable season) are waiting for infrastructure to catch up.

Ground & the riding year
Gentle
Mighty

Barstow's terrain is on the hilly side, and riders will feel it. The desert ground rises and falls enough that route choice matters — picking gentler lines pays off, and a bike with low gears earns its keep on the climbs. None of it is mountainous, but the climbs ask for real effort rather than a free ride.

Connected Room to grow Growing
Does the network join up into usable routes?
Right now the mapped bike network adds up to under a mile of dedicated cycleway — a starting point rather than a system. For the moment, getting between destinations means riding on roads shared with cars and stitching your own route together. This is the clearest opportunity on Barstow's board: even a few connected miles would change what everyday cycling here feels like. The bones of a network are yet to be laid, and that is where the biggest gains sit.

Calm Room to grow Growing
How much riding is away from fast traffic?
With little separated infrastructure in place, most riding in Barstow shares space with traffic. On quieter residential streets that is manageable, but the busier connecting roads ask for confidence and awareness. Calm, low-stress riding is the opportunity here — the kind that arrives with protected lanes and quiet bike routes, and has not yet. Newer riders will want to choose their streets and times with care.

All-Season Room to grow Growing
How rideable is this place across weather and seasons?
This is Barstow's strongest suit. The high-desert climate delivers a long ribbon of ridable days — dry air and clear skies across spring and fall mean weather rarely stops you. The catch is deep summer, when the heat becomes the deciding factor and midday rides give way to dawn and dusk. Handle the hot months with timing and much of the year is open road.

Welcoming Room to grow Growing
How easy is it for a newcomer or nervous rider to get started?
For a newcomer, Barstow asks a bit of self-reliance. The hills mean a first ride can be more effort than expected, and without a connected low-stress network, a nervous rider does not yet have an obvious easy place to build confidence. The opportunity is real — quiet neighborhood loops exist, and a rider who scouts a gentle, low-traffic circuit can still get started. A little planning goes a long way here.

Room to Roam Room to grow Growing
How far can you genuinely go by bike?
Barstow sits amid wide-open desert, which in principle offers long, uninterrupted lines out of town — the space to cover real distance is there. In practice, the lack of connected infrastructure and the hilly, exposed terrain mean longer rides are for confident, well-prepared riders rather than casual ones. Water, gearing, and timing all matter more here than in a milder place. The range is available to those who plan for the desert; it is not yet handed to you.

Car-Light Room to grow Growing
How well can the bike replace car trips here?
A small share of commuters, fewer than one in a hundred, currently bike to work in Barstow, which fits a place where the network is just beginning. For short errands on quiet streets, the bike already works for those willing to ride in mixed traffic. Replacing more car trips will follow the infrastructure: as connected, calm routes appear, more of daily life comes within comfortable reach. For now the car still wins most trips, which reflects where the city's infrastructure stands today, not a verdict on where it is headed.
